Bürger, Bürgertum, Bürgerlichkeit (english version)

A Basic Historical Concept

From the time the term Bürger[1.053] emerged in antiquity until the
transition to modernity, the core of its definition has referred to a
polity's political configuration. Since the eighteenth century,
however, a complex array of political, economic, and cultural
conditions have been integrated into the concept. When the term arose
historically in ancient Greece in the classical period, it described
the community of those who lived together in the city within a
